The high cost of college and the crushing burden of student debt is holding back far too many students and families in Washington state and across the country. That’s why I want to hear from you about how the costs of college and student debt are affecting you, your education, and your future. So far, I’ve heard from hundreds of students and families living with the burden of student debt, and I’ll be taking these stories with me to keep the pressure on Republicans to work with us to address this critical issue.

For me, this isn’t just another issue. It’s personal. Higher education and training was essential for my family to succeed and ensure we had a foothold into the middle class, and I continue to believe it is a crucial part of building an economy that works for all families, not just the wealthiest few.

When I was young, my father was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Within a few short years, he could no longer work, and without warning, my family had fallen on hard times. But my brothers and sisters and I got a good public education, and we were able to afford college with the help of Pell Grants. And my mom was able to get the skills she needed to get a job through a worker training program at Lake Washington Vocational School.

For so many students, higher education is a ticket to the middle class, and a highly educated workforce will help our nation compete in the 21st century global economy. That’s especially important for my home state of Washington, where so many employers need highly skilled workers.

I am going to continue working with my colleagues to make college more affordable and ensure students can graduate from college without the crushing burden of student debt.
